State Emergency Service (SES) units from across the Sunshine Coast are searching for volunteers with a passion for helping others in times of need.

SES Sunshine Coast Local Controller Janet Scott said units from the Glasshouse Mountains, Caloundra and Coolum would stage a series of information nights this month with the aim of adding new members to their ranks.

All events are due to begin at 6:30pm, with Coolum SES staging their information night on August 22, followed by Caloundra SES on August 24 and Glasshouse Mountains SES on August 25.

“I encourage anyone with an interest in becoming a part of the SES to attend one of the information nights being held this month,” Ms Scott said.

“We have a strong membership base on the Sunshine Coast, but we are always looking for new recruits who wish to challenge themselves and make a real difference to the lives of others.

“Being a part of the SES is highly rewarding, from making lifelong friends to being there for vulnerable members of the community and learning new skills including flood boat operation, heights training and correct use of chain saws.”

Ms Scott said it was important the Glasshouse Mountains, Caloundra and Coolum units added new members before the start of storm season, which is traditionally one of the busiest periods for the SES.

“When a storm hits, SES volunteers are often first on scene to plug leaking roofs, remove debris blocking roads and support people during and after a weather event,” she said.

“Adding new members will greatly enhance our storm response capability and build upon the tremendous work these three SES groups already do in their areas.

“There are no joining fees and volunteers receive protective clothing and relevant equipment based on their role within an SES group.”
